2013 INTERNATIONAL ENGINE OF THE YEAR AWARDS; ALL THE WINNERS

The 2013 International Engine of the Year Awards winners have just be announced, and the Ford 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo motor was the big winner, taking the coveted 2013 International Engine of the Year Award. But there were other winners, and some notable losers…

Overall winner, as stated above, was the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine fitted to the Ford Fiesta among others. For this big prize it beat the Volkswagen 1.4 TSI and the BMW 2.0-litre turbo. The New Engine of the Year was won by the 1.4 TSI though. Fiat’s 875 cc two cylinder turbo took home the Green Engine of the Year, ahead of General Motors’ 1.4 extender found in the VOLT, and the Tesla’s electric powertrain.

The Performance Engine of the Year went to Ferrari’s 544kW 6.3-litre V12, as found in the F12Berlinetta. It beat another Ferrari engine, the 4.5-litre used in the 458 Italia/ Spyder and McLaren’s 3.8-litre twin turbo V8.

In the categories section, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost from Ford took the sub 1-litre category, Volkswagen’s 1.4 TSI drove off with the 1 to 1.4-litre trophy, the 1.4 to 1.8-litre nod went to BMW/PSA’s 1.6-litre turbo, while BMW also took the 1.8 to 2.0-litre category with their 2.0-litre twin turbo. Audi ruled the 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre zone with its 5-cylinder turbo motor found in the TT RS and RS 3. The 2.5 to 3.0-litre category, for years a BMW given, went to Porsche’s 2.7-litre boxer. Interestingly there were four BMW engines in the top 6 in this category, placed 2nd to 5th. McLaren’s 3.8-litre V8 took 3.0-litre to 4.0-litre, and Ferrari’s 6.3-litre V12 was top of the pops in the “above 4-litre” category. It whacked its 4.5-litre V8 sibling and the Mercedes-Benz 5.5-litre biturbo (used by most new AMGs).
