The Phantom of the Auction

A Rolls Royce Phantom is one of the star cars going under the Charterhouse hammer in their auction of classic & vintage cars on Sunday 21st April.
“It is a magnificent Rolls Royce which has won numerous concours awards in England, Europe and the USA.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “Having had a lifelong interest in classic and vintage cars, along with having enjoyed all the Bond films, it is quite amusing to be auctioning a Rolls Royce Phantom very similar to the one used in the iconic James Bond film Goldfinger.”
This Rolls Royce Phantom II was commissioned by Sir Humphrey de Trafford in 1934, with a stylish Sedanca de Ville coachbuilt body by Windovers. Sir Humphrey was a keen racehorse owner who won the 1958 St Leger Stakes and the Epson Derby. Of his four daughters, Ann married Derek Henry Parker Bowles and Mary married Sir Francis James Cecil Bowes-Lyon.
Finished in yellow over black, just like the Rolls Royce used by Auric Goldfinger, but with a body made from steel and not gold, this Rolls Royce is estimated to sell for £100,000-120,000 when it goes under Charterhouse hammer.
The owner, who lives on the Isle of Man, has been reducing his collection over a number of years through Dorset based Charterhouse Auctioneers, but still retains a few of his favourite motor cars and motorcycles for use on the island.
