Just 7,000 Miles and Two Families in 89 Years

One of the star cars, in the Charterhouse auction of classic and vintage cars being held at Sherborne Castle on Sunday 21st July, is a 1924 AC Anzani with less than 7,000 recorded miles.

“It is a truly amazing and unique piece of motoring history entered into this specialist classic car auction. So often we hear half truths about cars with long ownership and low miles, usually careful lady or vicar drivers, which we take with a pinch of salt, but in this case it is all true.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “In addition, AC motor cars have had some great exposure, primarily due to a similar 1927 AC being driven and crashed by Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey!”

Purchased new by Mr Rice in 1924 this AC was first shipped to India, only to return to England 6 months later after the owner died. It then passed to Mr Rice’s sister who put just 5,705 miles on it before selling it to Mrs Pearce in 1958. She bought it for her 16 year old son, who was initially too young to drive it, and with whom it has remained with ever since.

Retaining its original polished aluminium body, this incredibly rare and unique piece of motoring history, having been in the same ownership for the past 55 years, and having been owned by just two families for nearly 90 years, is estimated at £18,000-22,000 in the Charterhouse auction.

2014 MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS: FIRST PHOTO!

The brand new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, 2014 model year, is coming to Mzansibefore December 2013. Order books are already open and the waiting list is said to be at least six months long. In the meantime, while you wait, here’s the first official picture of the car.

In a previous article we posted interior shots of the car, which were very impressive and seemed like of a high design and quality standard. The new S-Class certainly looks like it will remain class-leader when it arrives. There will be a raft of technologies to accompany it, such as Lane Keep Assist, Self-Parking/ leaving Assist, Night Vision, COMAND with USB, Bluetoothand WiFi connectivity, as well as others.

Engines should comprise of the current crop that’s found in the E-Class, GL-Class and some CL models, such as the 3.0-litre turbo diesel (S 350 CDI BlueTec), 4.7-litre V8 with 320kW (S 500) and a 5.5-litre Biturbo V8 in the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG.

MCLAREN P1 HYPERCAR WINTER TESTING VIDEO

With only a few months remaining until the first deliveries will be made to just 375 customers, the development programme for the McLaren P1 continues to accelerate as it nears its end. This extensive work is being carried out to ensure that the McLaren P1 delivers on the target of being “the best driver’s car in the world on road and track”…or a frozen lake, for that matter.

As part of durability testing, the development team recently travelled with the McLaren P1 to the dramatic frozen landscapes of the Arctic Circle, in northern Sweden. Here, the car was put through its paces and tested to the extremes, in some of the most hostile and toughest conditions on the planet.

The testing schedule continues at pace, with XP prototypes running extensively across the globe, working to optimise the groundbreaking systems and technologies which have been borne of 50 years of race-winning knowledge and expertise.

The culmination of this testing and infamous McLaren attention to detail will be showcased over the summer, when the McLaren P1 will publicly demonstrate the power available from the mid-mounted 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine and highly effective electric motor which generate 674kW, with a number of dynamic displays.

As plans for the 50th anniversary celebrations for McLaren continue, it has also been confirmed that the latest model from McLaren Automotive will feature as part of the planned activities at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

SUZUKI DONATES CARS TO TSHWANE MUSLIM SCHOOL

Suzuki Auto South Africa is supporting the innovative initiative of a Tshwane school to create better, more responsible and more safety conscious young drivers.
 

The Tshwane Muslim School’s driver training programme includes both attitude and skill-based elements, and will receive a major boost from the loan of a Suzuki Alto hatchback to the school for a 12-month period.

“Young people in the 18 to 29-year age bracket are significantly overrepresented in the tally of traffic accident-related injuries and fatalities,” says Iqbal Areff, headmaster of the Tshwane Muslim School.

“School communities play a key role in assisting students in Grades 10 to 12 to realise the gravity of their responsibilities as a road user. At the Tshwane Muslim School, driver education is attitude-based, which includes developing the knowledge, understanding and decision-making skills required to deal with a broad spectrum of road use issues.”

Areff adds that the school requested the MEC for Transport in Gauteng, as well as the RTMC, to assist with developing a driver training model. But it also decided to take its driver training programme a step further by providing practical in-car training.

“The Suzuki Alto is the ideal vehicle for this purpose,” says Areff. “It will give learners and potential purchasers the opportunity to experience the vehicle hands on. The driver training programme will consist of 34 hours of classroom instruction, eight hours of behind-the-wheel training, and eight hour of in-car observation.”

In addition, students are required to practice their driving skills under the supervision of a parent or guardian for at least a further 24 hours.


“We decided to support this project because it is a meaningful and relevant way for Suzuki Auto SA to give something back to the community,” says Yukio Sato, the company’s newly appointed managing director.

“Considering the high number of young drivers involved in accidents, we hope that supporting this training programme will be an investment in youth development, while also recognising the foresight of the Tshwane Muslim School in developing its own driver training programme.”
